Samsung Galaxy S8: This could be our first proper look at the Galaxy S8, Leaked

     

Over the course of the past few months, we’ve heard an awful lot about Samsung’s much-anticipated upcoming flagship smartphone of 2017, the Galaxy S8  and now it looks like we may be getting our first proper glimpse at the design of the device, thanks to a leaked photograph that surfaced on Chinese social networking website Weibo earlier today,

As you can see in the image left, the most noticeable difference between the purported Galaxy S8 and its predecessor is the omission of the physical home button and capacitive navigation keys. What’s strange, however, is that there don’t appear to be any on-screen buttons, either. Typically, when you head into Settings, they don’t automatically hide so we’re left wondering whether the photo is a product of some Photoshop wizardry.


There could be a simple explanation for the lack of buttons, though. It’s perfectly feasible that Samsung could have developed a full-screen mode, which can be manually activated to take advantage of the entire display. If this (or a similar feature) turns out to exist, then it’s likely that they keys would only appear when a user swipes up from the bottom of the screen. This is, of course, nothing but speculation on our part.

If it wasn’t for this major discrepancy, we’d feel pretty confident in saying that this picture is the real deal. Earlier this week, we heard from our insiders that by doing away with the front-facing buttons, Samsung was able to shrink the width of the top and bottom bezels on the handset by as much as 30 percent. Although, we have to say, it doesn’t look great; mainly because the bottom bezel is thinner than the top (another discrepancy).

Unfortunately, as with all leaks, we have to take this alleged design with a pinch of salt until Samsung provides us with some evidence with regards to what it has in store for its next flagship, and if the latest rumors are anything to go by it looks like we may have to wait until April 18 to find out more. There is some good news, though. As we approach its release date, the frequency of leaks should increase — so there’s a good chance we’ll see more of the device in the coming weeks.

Galaxy S8 might be Fitted with Rear Mounted Fingerprint Sensor

     
galaxy s8In present moment's chapter number 'who's still collecting teasers' of the Galaxy S8 rumor mill, it is suggested that a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor will make it to the unborn Samsung flagship. The reason cited is that in initial testing of the fingerprint sensor embedded in the display has proven inaccurate, and a dedicated fingerprint sensor is still needed. Proof, what's wrong with the default Home button, you can ask? There will be no Home 'button', strictly speaking, as multiple sources have already stated, and the entire front of the phone will be mostly display. That's why when Synaptics (a Samsung component supplier) announced earlier this week the industry-first optical fingerprint scanner, everyone expected the S8 to mark its debut. Well, this source says 'no'. Additionally, the Galaxy S8 will come with the iris recognition tech from the ill-fated Note7 that uses a dedicated camera for the purpose, unlike the LG Innotek implementation where the two are fitted in a single module. Iris recognition, however, is still not as popular as fingerprint scanning, so let's not be too courageous by getting rid of the latter just yet, Samsung must have thought. We'll file this in the 'plausible' category, but obviously there's no way of knowing for sure just yet.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will receive Android 7.1.1 Nougat soon

     

Samsung has revealed that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will jump from Marshmallow straight to Android 7.1.1 Nougat when the official update arrives.

Android 7.1.1 Nougat is the latest version of Android, announced by Google on December 5. The update which delivers new features like app shortcuts and new emojis is currently available for Nexus and Pixel devices, while third-party manufacturers now have access to the source code via the Android Open Source Project.

Samsung is setting up Note 7 exchange booths at airports around the world

     

They'll give you a new phone and swap over your data



Samsung is setting up Galaxy Note 7 exchange booths in airports around the world, hoping to stop customers taking the dangerous device onto flights at the last minute. The first of these new "customer service points" appear to have been introduced in South Korean airports, but Samsung has confirmed the booths are opening in airports across Australia, with reports of the desks appearing in the US as well.

The booths are located in "high-traffic terminals" before security screening, says Samsung, and allow Note 7 owners to swap their phone for an unspecified exchange device. According to a report from ABC7News in San Francisco — where a Samsung exchange desk has appeared at the city's international airport — employees for the tech company are on hand to help customers transfer their data onto a new phone.

These are necessary measures, as despite two global recalls for the Note 7 and daily news coverage of its dangers, analysts say that more than 1 million devices are still in use. And as of last week, it's now a federal crime to bring a Note 7 onto a flight in the US, meaning that anyone caught with the phone risks fines and even imprisonment of up to 10 years. Basically, if you're going on holiday any time soon you need to remember to bring your passport, buy some sunscreen, and leave any potentially explosive electronics at home.
